“Sharing Love with Rural Communities” Donation Program: Yu & His Mom's Lunar New Year Eve Dinner

'I always think the Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner is especially delicious, but the best part is being able to share it with my mom. That is my favorite time of all.' Yu said as he thanked the social worker.
Since the loss of Yu’s father, he and his mother have relied on one another. His mother has carried the weight of the family’s livelihood on her own. She was once hospitalized with a heart attack, and although she has since recovered, ongoing heart-related health issues, along with anemia and low blood pressure, still leave her easily short of breath and often physically unwell.

Even in the midst of hardship, Yu’s mother remains steadfast and hopeful. She often says, "As long as my child can grow up healthy, every sacrifice is worth it." Yet even during the Lunar New Year holiday, she still has to work, leaving little time or energy to prepare a reunion dinner for the family.

With the support of caring donors, a warm Lunar New Year’s Eve meal was delivered to Yu and his mother. More than easing the family’s financial burden, it brought comfort, dignity, and the warmth of the holiday into their home, giving Yu a New Year filled with care and togetherness.

Through our social work services, CWLF not only provides financial assistance during the school year, but also responds to each family’s needs with additional support, such as Lunar New Year’s Eve meals and care packages during long school breaks. For many families, this support helps ease financial pressure and creates space for precious moments of connection and joy.

When families thank our social workers, they are also thanking every kind-hearted donor who has made this support possible. Thank you for helping us bring love to rural communities, so that children and families can create cherished memories, share the comfort of a meal together, and welcome the New Year with hope.

CWLF’s “Sharing Love with Rural Communities” Donation Program

In the first half of 2026, we supported 4,097 students through after-school tutoring, helped 8,159 children take part in extracurricular activities, provided financial assistance to 2,084 children, and reached 371 schools with the support children need to keep learning and growing.

1. Service Participants

  • Elementary schools in rural or remote communities with limited access to social resources and a total student enrollment of 300 or fewer.
  • Families in which the primary caregiver is unemployed or in poor health, or in which a child is being raised by grandparents or a single parent, placing the family under financial strain.

2. Funds are primarily used for:

  • Basic living support: Helping meet the essential daily needs of children in rural communities and children from adversity, including school-related expenses, daily necessities, and learning materials, so they can grow up with greater stability and security.
  • Seasonal care packages: Providing nutritious food during long school breaks and holiday meal support during major festivals, so children can continue to receive adequate nutrition during vacations and feel the warmth of care and companionship.
  • Expanded learning opportunities: Supporting school clubs, after-school tutoring, and enrichment camps to ensure that children in rural communities have safe and meaningful opportunities to learn and grow beyond the classroom. Through diverse learning experiences, children can discover new possibilities, broaden their horizons, and build confidence in themselves.
  • Social worker home visits and counseling: Through home visits and individualized support, social workers gain a deeper understanding of each child’s family circumstances and school experience, increase the frequency of visits when needed, connect children and families with essential resources, and provide timely assistance to help ensure every child can grow up in a safe, caring, and supportive environment with the holistic care they deserve.

Through support for daily needs, club participation, empowerment programs, dream-building initiatives, and urban exchange opportunities, we help children continue their education, explore diverse learning experiences, and pursue their dreams. We also open doors for children in rural communities to step beyond their immediate surroundings, broaden their horizons, and discover new possibilities for the future. Every donation is a gift of hope and care, walking alongside these children as they overcome hardship, build self-worth, and move toward a brighter future.
