Winter Warmth Campaign: Accompany Children Through This Freezing Cold Winter

For most of us, winter’s chill is something a warm coat or a hot drink can easily chase away.
However, for children from families in need, a cold snap brings real discomfort — and real challenges to daily life.

Every warm layer, every blanket, and every nutritious item becomes an essential source of comfort that helps them get through the season safely. Before the cold winds arrive, a simple act of kindness can make all the difference. When kindness reaches their door, cold wind isn’t the only thing knocking anymore.

Tin Roof, One Bed, One Thin Blanket — That’s All Jay and His Great-Grandmother Have

The rusty metal door can’t keep out the cold wind, yet this tin-roof shack is home to 10-year-old Jay and his 91-year-old great-grandmother. Inside, there is only one bed and one thin blanket, and the two of them rely on each other for warmth. When the temperature dropped a few days ago, Jay began coughing and sniffling, and soon his great-grandmother caught the same cold. Caring for Jay has never been easy. His grandfather once supported the family, but he passed away from overwork three years ago. Since then, the responsibility of raising Jay has fallen entirely on his great-grandmother, now in her nineties. With tears in her eyes, she recalls the past and softly asks, “I’m already so old. If one day I’m gone… what will happen to Jay?

When Jay heard her words, he immediately shouted, “Great-grandma, you have to stay with me until I grow up! I hope you live long and healthy. I’ll take good care of you!” Although he doesn't always know how to express his feelings, Jay gently pats her back, gives her a little massage, and then playfully asks her to massage him in return. The two tease each other, laugh together, and fill the small home with a tender, joyful warmth.

Let Warmth Reach Children Before the Cold Does

With the first cold front about to sweep across Taiwan, our case worker hurried to visit Jay’s home, bringing two thick comforters and warm clothing. The moment Jay saw the comforters, he tore open the package in excitement and burrowed into the comforters, leaving only half of his smiling face peeking out. “It’s so warm!” he beamed — and his joy was so contagious that every adult in the room couldn’t help but smile, too.

Along with winter supplies, the case worker also brought a box of nutritious food — including Jay’s favorites: curry, oatmeal, noodles, and canned goods. Since the family doesn’t have a dining table, Jay normally pulls over two small chairs so he and his great-grandmother can sit together at the household shrine table, warm up their meals in the rice cooker, and share them side by side.

The case worker has been supporting Jay and his great-grandmother for more than two years. In the beginning, Jay’s great-grandmother would always say, “No need—we can manage,” treating hardship as something she simply had to endure. But after many home visits and the gradual building of trust, and especially after she was injured in a car accident, she finally allowed herself to accept support from others. For this pair who rely on each other for everything, every visit and every care package has become a small but steady source of strength that helps them keep going.

Many More Children Are Still Waiting for Warmth This Winter

As winter arrives, it is a season of togetherness for many — but for families experiencing hardship in remote areas, it can be a difficult time to get through. According to CWLF’s survey:

  • 45.1% of children say their homes feel as cold as the outdoors
  • 36.5% either avoid using heaters to save electricity or simply do not have one
  • 23.7% continue wearing shoes even after they’ve worn through
  • 4.4% live in homes without a water heater

For these children, winter is not only cold — it is a season without the warmth they can rely on.

Thank You for Your Love — You’ve Helped Bring Warmth to Children This Winter

Every year, as temperatures begin to drop, our case workers visit children’s homes with comforters, warm clothing, and nutritious supplies, staying by their side through the hardest days of winter.

This year, we invite you once again to become a warm light in a child’s life — to place comfort in their hands before the cold wind arrives, and to remind them that when loneliness comes, they will not face this winter alone.

To help more children get through the season safely, CWLF invites you to join our winter donation campaign and share the warmth where it’s needed most: click👉Donate (When filling out the “Purpose of Donation” field, please choose “Adversity and services for disadvantaged families”)
