Child abuse was still prevalent in institutes, daycare centers, schools and home settings in Taiwan over the past few years. However, the case investigation process was flawed with passive responses, which showed how far Taiwan was from the goal of ending violence against children.
In responding to this critical issue, CSO representatives Holden Chu, Division Head of Policy Center of CWLF, Wei-Chun Wang, chairperson of Taiwan Children’s Rights, and Ciao-Lan Feng, CEO of Humanistic Education Foundation, attended the “End Child Maltreatment” press conference hosted by Legislative Yuan Association for Child Rights with its chairperson Wan-Yu Wang, vice chairperson Chen-Yuan Chiu and legislator Meei-Ling Loh on the day before the International Children’s Day (11/20) and the release of Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child-Second Report (ROC). During the press conference, all panelists signed the “End Child Maltreatment Statement” to call for government’s action to end violence against children.
CWLF has been running Orange Ribbon campaigns for 11 years in hopes of the goal Love Children Zero Violence can be realized in relevant regulations. In light of the child abuse incidents in daycare centers lately, Holden Chu mentioned that CWLF has created a coalition with several CSOs to plan on proposing a Childcare Specialized Act (Civil Society Version) which will include chapters of child rights and provisions of whistle blowers to encourage people to report any suspicious child maltreatment incidents.
